So last night, I had a great idea to make an IRC channel, asked Zeru if it was okay, and got approval.
This is mostly a guide on how to connect to the FS IRC channel and a quick guide on its commands.
An IRC channel is basically a real time text-messaging chatroom. This chatroom(called channels) is basically just an
upgraded chatbox, it does not have to be strictly about any topic and it can be as random as random gets. Think of it as a better hamachi talk where everyone does not have to be in the same room. The rules are stated by the server, quakenet.org. The following list dictates what is forbidden in this channel:
- Spoiler:
Clones
Creating excessive clones from your connection, or by using proxies, is forbidden.
If you need to run more than 5 clients on your connection you need to acquire a trust, or your clients will get G-lined. Note that the customers of a few ISPs are only allowed to run 2 simultaneous connections.
Flooding
Flooding QuakeNet servers or other users is forbidden. Flooding is defined as sending large amounts of text, excessive CTCP requests, joining and parting channels rapidly and other attempts to flood some user out of the network or to disrupt normal channel activity.
Hacking
Hacking the network or other users is forbidden. This includes things like DoS attacks and password bruteforcing.
Illegal material
Distributing or requesting illegal material in our network is forbidden. This includes, but is not limited to; Illegal copies of software, distribution of illegal MP3 files, movies (VCD/DivX), ie; any copyrighted material where the copyright is not owned by the user.
Multiplayer Cheats
Distributing or requesting cheats to multiplayer games is forbidden.
Pornography
Distributing or requesting any sexual/pornographic material is forbidden, be it commercial or non-commercial.
Racism & Nazism
Distributing racist or nazism material is forbidden. This doesn't mean channels like #anti-somegroup would be forbidden - we still believe in freedom of speech, as long as it remains within certain limits.
Spamming & Advertising
Massive spamming and/or advertising (ie. promoting your website, product, channel, whatever) in channels or queries is forbidden.
Spreading of malicious code
Coding and spreading of trojans/viruses/worms is forbidden.
Takeovers
Taking over a channel is forbidden. However, we don't consider it a takeover if:
A) the channel can be recovered with Q, OR
B) the channel's owner voluntarily gives ownership to someone who then takes the channel over, OR
C) the channel's owner himself/herself takes the channel over, OR
D) the channel is a freeop channel (everyone gets ops) or acts otherwise stupidly.
Other
An IRC Operator may take the necessary actions against any user if he or she sees it fit.
Use your common sense and don't do to others what you wouldn't want to be done to you, and you should be just fine.
So now, let's move into more fun stuff: the guide on how to join the channel.
The most easy and simple way to join the Final Story channel is the following:
1. Go the quakenet's webchat: http://webchat.quakenet.org/?channels=TOGF
2. Choose a Nickname (appropriate please, if not you will get banned)
3. Press Connect and that's it! You are now connected to the official FS IRC channel.
Now, for those who do not want to go the easy way, or want to have more complicated stuff, you will want to get an IRC program. I suggest KVIRC (my personal favorite) or mIRC.
1. Download any IRC program you want an open it.
2. When prompted to connect to a server, type in or copy-paste "velocity.us.quakenet.org"
3. After successfully logging in, type in "/join #TOGF" Congratulations! You are now connected to the official FS IRC channel.
So now that you are connected, you may want to
register in the network. Registering (often referred to as Authing or Authenticating) helps to hide your IP as well as let everybody know who you are even if you are using another nickname as well as give you a cool username. To register and Auth, follow the next steps:
1. Make sure you have the Nickname you want (you can change it by typing in "/Nick [nickname you want]") because this will become your Auth username.
2. Type in /msg Q HELLO [your email] [your email]
(Obviously, replace [your email] with your actual e-mail, as you will be sent an e-mail with your password and some information)
3. Once you have checked your email and received the password, type in the command:
"/msg Q Auth [username] [password]"
(Replace [username] with the username you registered with, it is identical to the nick you used when you said HELLO.
Replace [password] with the password you received in your e-mail)
4. Check you are authed by typing "/msg Q whoami" If you see a message back from Q that includes the line:
"-Q(TheQBot@CServe.quakenet.org)- -Information for user John" (using account john) ...then you know you have said HELLO and AUTH'd correctly.
5. Now anytime you log in, you may auth by simply typing in "/msg Q Auth [username] [password]"
I will now list some basic IRC commands that everybody should know. In order to not make the post longer than it already is, the list will be inside a spoiler; click it to open.
- Spoiler:
/join
Type /join #channelname -- to join a channel of your choice
Example: /join #TOGF
What it looks like:
Metawe [~Metawe@85.197.223.69] has joined #TOGF
/me
The /me is an action message.
Type /me 'does anything'
Example: /me waves hello
What it looks like:
* bossmom waves hello
/msg
Type /msg nickname (message) to start a private chat.
Example: /msg Zeru Hey yo, how are you?
What it looks like:
-> *Metawe* Hey tat, how are you?
/nick
/nick changes your nickname
Example: type /nick newnickname
What it looks like: I typed /nick BeforeFails
*** Metawe is now known as BeforeFails
/notice
A notice is used to send a short message to another person without opening up a private window.
Type /notice nickname (message)
Example: /notice badnick Please change your nickname for this family channel.
What it looks like:
-> -badnick- Please change your nickname for this family channel.
/part
Type /part -- to leave one channel
Type /partall -- to leave all the channels you are in
/quit
When you are leaving and want to leave a message, you may use /quit.
Type /quit (message)
Example: /quit See you all, going out for dinner...
What it looks like: Metawe [~Metawe@85.197.223.69] has quit IRC: Quit: See you all, going out for dinner...
/whois
Type /whois nickname to see a bit more information about another user. You'll see what server another person is using, or what their ISP is. Pretty helpful when you don't recognize a nickname that wants to chat. You may recognize the IP, (Internet Protocol) and then feel more comfortable carrying on a conversation. You'll also be able to see what other channels a person is in, which might be a good indicator if you really want to talk with them or not.
Example: /whois Metawe
What it looks like:
Metawe is Metawe!~kvirc@Metawe.users.quakenet.org
Metawe's real name: NOTZERU
Metawe's channels: @#TOGF
Metawe's server: *.quakenet.org - QuakeNet IRC Server
Metawe is authenticated as Metawe
Metawe WHOIS info from velocity.ca.us.quakenet.org
/help
There's one more very helpful command, and probably the one you'll use a lot when first starting out. In fact, I still use it quite a lot, and that's the built-in help menu of whatever IRC software you are using, be it web-based or an actual program. There is a TON of help in them, especially the program's.
One thing I won't put in the spoiler, as it is extremely useful. Is how to
ping. It isn't actually pinging, it's more like calling up someone, getting someone's attention. If you use MSN messenger, you could compare it to a buzz. Anyways, to ping, you just have to type someone's name. For example: I want to ping Zeru, his nick is Zeru so I only need to type "Zeru" and it would ping him. But I could also type something like "Hey Zeru you have to see this!" and it would work as well. All you need is type someone's nick.
That concludes my IRC guide. Hope I will see you all... GET YOUR ASS IN THIS CHANNEL.
