| It's not the best for compression, but it's the most popular compression program and you only have to upload one file. | |

| 1 reason is you cant upload folders so you have to upload a rar
file so you can just extract the folder
and you cant be so stupid you upload every file 1 at a time | |

| Basically what everyone just said. If you were to download 1 file at a time, you would have a lot of browsers up, and then you gotta put everything together. A rar file simplifies those steps. | |

| .rars are just an "updated" version of .zip, they are not from the same company (WinZip is from Microsoft and WinRar is independent) but .rar copied the source code, GUI and idea of WinZip and tweaked and updated it somehow. The compressing capability was not greatly improved but there are a lot more options when compressing or customize it... and it's just more popular. | |

| ZIP is built in on every freaking Windows already. So although most people are not aware of it, almost everyone has it, so technically speaking: ZIP = more popular. | |

| WinZip is not already installed. Windows has some kind of lame extracting program which only supports .zip, but that codec/program is not WinZip. However, if you meant the extension .zip, it might be more popular because of that reason... | |
