Zeika Backstory

I'll have you people know, I don't like Zeika. I prefer Serene. Still, his background is interesting.

"We've done something terrible..."
"How? How can this be so...taboo?"
"This is forbidden...damned in birth and damned in lineage..."
"Why? Why is this so evil? How is this wrong?!"
"Phoenixes...legendary birds of flame. We are the mightiest race of birds...and only once in a thousand years do I, the Phoenix of Magic be able to see light. Only once in a millennium can a Phoenix with power over elements other than fire be born."
"But...for this child to be born..."
"During the War...It's terrible, I know."
"You charmed me as a human..."
"We Phoenix are as sentient as a human, and our innate magic abilities allow us to take human form. It is very difficult, however, due to our constant wish to soar in the skies..."
"But...for me? Why?"
"I loved you. Simply, and wholly. There is no sin in love."
"That shortsightedness might just give our child a dismal future..."

"You! You are to be drafted into the army!"
"Why? I'm but a simple merchant!"
"You have no choice! Pack your belongings!"

"My lady! Please, escape with us! The humans are converging on our homeland!"
"No. I shall stay here."
"Please! The line of Mystic Phoenixes will die if you do not!"
"My decision is made. Leave me now."
The green-haired woman turned her back to the messenger, her white dress reflecting her apathy. Without a further word, the messenger turned into a gold and red bird, and flew off. The moment he did, the woman transformed into a green-feathered bird, and flew back into a hidden room, hidden by her bed. This room had not been seen by any, not even phoenix's deceased father. She had put many layers of invisibility spells on it, and only she could notice its existence. A young boy with green hair a shade lighter than his mother's lie in it.
She reverted her form and closed her eyes. "Oh, Time, impetuous flow; rivers and rivulets, dragging life in tow; I reject your rush, your unending race; My will embodied in this frozen space! Life Stream: Stopping of Time!"
A great rush of blue light shone from the woman, and encased the boy in a blue tomb.
Screams could be heard dangerously near, now. The woman had not enough magic to escape the inevitable fate that awaited her.
Thus, the baby boy slept on, encased, while his mother was killed by the humans, not a meter away...



The farmer walked out to tend his crops. After all, it was but another day in Henesys. It was still planting season, so there was work aplenty. He was in his prime: mid thirties, and had a wife, but no children. One day, he walked to his fields, as he normally did every day, and suddenly saw that a large plot of land had been dug up.
"Grr...I'll get the hooligan who did this!" he yelled.
He instantly assumed one of the pranksters from the nearby Adventurer School did it.
However, he promptly stopped when an eerie blue glow emanated from the hole in his garden.
Looking within it, a bright blue flash suddenly blinded him, and he covered his eyes quickly. When he opened it, he saw a serene, sleeping baby, not even a handful of months old. He had bright green hair, and a very serene composure.
Suddenly, the light began to take a solidified form. It began curving...then, the man realized it was writing.
He was mostly illiterate, but he could make out letters if he needed to. Z...e...i...k...a.
Zeika. The boy's name was Zeika.


[Insert anime opening theme here. How about the Mahou Shoujo Madoka Magica theme? Kawash(i)ta yakusoku wasurenai yo me wo toji tashikameru...]

==Six Years Later==


"Now, class, what's the most basic thing to use when fighting an emo slime?" the teacher asked.
Nobody replied. Class 6-A of the Henesys Bowman School was the worst of the worst, and was notorious for being the absolute failures in the entire community of aspiring Archers.
There were two bright gems, however. A mysterious young man named Reyka, who always wore a full-bodied cloak. He also seemed to have partial blindness, as one eye is covered with a bandage. However, his marksmanship with a crossbow was immensely proficient for his level.
The other was a lazy, but brilliant young man named Zeika. He couldn't shoot worth anything, but his memory was nigh-infinite, reciting tactical stratagems like nobody's business. However, he prefers reading his own books.

"Come on, somebody must know!" the instructor said, growing impatient.
However, there was incessant chatter in the classroom. Nobody was listening, except Reyka.
"Electricity, sir," he said.
A ragtag group of boys glared once in his direction, but he didn't mind.


After school, Zeika was packing all of his books. He never actually studied for tests, because he remembered everything.

A few boys walked over to him. Nobody else was in the class room. "Hey, Zeika."
Zeika looked up. "Yeah, what's up?"
"You know that creepy Reyka kid?" one asked.
"Yeah, he's a real oddball, that one," Zeika said nonchalantly.
"Whaddya say we play a trick on him? Harmless, really. See, we're gonna show him a thing or two about 6-A. As far as we know, he lives alone. So whaddya say we go and push him around?" one of the boys said.
Bullying was a ubiquitous problem in the adventurer school. Nobody could really enforce it.

"Sure thing," Zeika said with a grin.
"We need you to think of a plan," he said. "You're smart."
"Easy," Zeika said. "He always walks back to the house on the Hill East of Henesys. Shadowing him will be easy, because monsters are in the area. The moment we enter the Rocky Lands is when you can attack him, which is in Perion territory. That way, it's essentially out of Henesys's jurisdiction," Zeika said.


"You comin' along?" they asked Zeika.
"Sure. Always up for a good show. Mom n' Pop don't give a crud if I come back late anyhow," Zeika said.


=Twenty-seven minutes later, at the outskirts of Perion=
Zeika looked up at the sky, measuring distances. He looked at his three companions.
"The kid's always on time. I reckon we have about 6 minutes."

Six minutes passed in deadly silence.
Then, right on cue, Reyka began shuffling across the desert. His cloak made a distinctive sound against the sand, and his cloak clashed with the surrounding colors.
"Go ahead, now," Zeika said. "I can't shoot worth crud, and my sword skills are laughable. Have fun, will ya?"
The boys grinned malevolently, then fanned out and approached Reyka.

Zeika inched closer to hear their conversation.
"Hey, you, you know who we are?"

Reyka simply stared back.
"Fine, if you won't do anything, we will!"
The first boy walked up and shoved Reyka harshly. He landed on his hind....and the hem of his hood flew back.


What was revealed was a long mane of golden yellow hair. It looked very well-kept, and in a style that did not fit a girl at all.
"...Ouch."
The voice was the final straw. Reyka's voice took on a deep tone during classes, but here, it was light and airy...
"Ha! The legendary archer is actually a GIRL! Well won't that be a real kicker?" said one of the boys.
Reyka stood up and looked at the boys.
"Don't look at me like that!"
He shoved her harshly, but failed to notice one thing:
A looming chasm behind her. As she lost her footing, her eyes grew wide. "Ah-..."
She began to fall.
"Ha! See you tomorrow, you teacher's pet!" yelled one of the boys.
Zeika ran out from his hiding place. "You absolute idiots! That pit's one thousand five hundred and ninety meters deep!"
"So? Good riddance, I say," one of the boys said.
Zeika began to think extremely fast. He had about sixteen seconds.
Without a second thought, he leaped off the cliff.

And without a guide, or a fleeting thought, he morphed into his Phoenix form. He flew down as fast as he could, and managed to get under Reyka. He spread his wings out and let the force of Reyka's fall force him downward, because if he tried to stop all that velocity by directly opposing it, he could potentially kill her.
Eventually, the fall stopped. Again, without a second thought, he zoomed out of the chasm in a quarter of the time it took for Reyka to fall. He appeared at the top and shrugged the girl off his back.

"A phoenix!" screamed one of the boys.
"My grandma told me about them! They're bloodthirsty beasts! Run!"
"Wait, no, I'm n--," Zeika began, but they had already ran away.

Zeika flew back to the city, despondent. He didn't know what was going on, but...
An old man approached him. "Demon from the past! Begone!"
He threw a rock at him. A projectile-based weapon buffeted his wings, and he staggered.
"No, wait!" Zeika said, but they continued.
Zeika flew away, seeing nothing but opposition. He felt nothing but despair...he vaguely realized archers had been sent after him, but he kept flying...


Over a large forest, he was shot down with a flurry of arrows. He crashed straight into a building, and blacked out.


Zeika opened his eyes. "Where...?"
"So, you've awakened."
An old man was sipping a cup of tea. He wore snow-white robes, and had a full beard and pointed magician's hat. He looked down at Zeika.
"You...," Zeika said.
"There are people who hate you. Who revile you for your power. That is but a thing of the past, and nothing but propaganda," Grendel said.
"You...know of those creatures?" Zeika asked.
"Not those. You. You are the last of the Mystic Phoenixes, and are half-human, no less," the man said.
"How do you know of their existence?"
"They don't call me Grendel the Really Old for nothing. But we digress. I can teach you how to control your powers, but you must never let anyone know."
"Fine," Zeika said.

This was written as an attempt to break out of Writer's Block. I'll edit it for more awesomeness later.

Life Stream, Stopping of Time? Oh snap, she must be a boss! Only bosses have 'time' based skills. :O
